Davenport House | Bridgnorth, Shropshire

It’s very exciting to feature Ellen and Dave’s country house wedding at the beautiful Davenport House in Shropshire! Having grown up over in New Zealand, there will forever be something special about the historic charm of an English country house and Davenport House is no exception! Ellen and Dave chose to celebrate much of their day in Davenport’s expansive exteriors, which was a lovely touch. The couple said their vows during an outdoor ceremony on the lawns with a backdrop of the house and the rolling hills beyond, and then celebrated an outdoor reception in the sunshine. Their wedding breakfast took place in the venue’s beautiful historic dining room, framed by fresh spring floral arrangements of roses and trailing foliage created by Gingerlily Florists. Then towards the end of the wedding reception, golden light streamed through the windows and lit the room in the most lovely golden hour glow. As it grew dark, Ellen and Dave ended the day with sparklers which is always lovely to capture! This has been such a beautiful wedding to showcase and I hope you enjoy looking over it…

The preparations at Davenport House wedding venue in Shropshire

The morning preparations for the day unfolded at Davenport House, between the main house and its on-site cottages. As an exclusive use venue, couples celebrating their wedding at Davenport House have the chance to really make the most of the venue during their celebrations, which is always lovely to see.

An Outdoor Ceremony with a view of the rolling hills

Ellen and Dave centred their ceremony around the beautiful exteriors which Davenport House has to offer. While it’s true that the English weather can often prove temperamental, Ellen and Dave had luck on their side for the ceremony and managed to enjoy the sun shining throughout. Following their open air vows, they walked down the aisle to many cheers and congratulations and then enjoyed a champagne tower inside the main house.

Following the champagne tower, we headed outside to the stately home gardens for the drinks reception and garden games. As a documentary wedding photographer, the afternoon reception is always a lovely time to capture stories in the slower moments, doing justice to the many different stories unfolding through the day – for more on documentary wedding photography approach, click here.

Davenport House wedding venue, in Shropshire

A beautiful Georgian manor nestled within the peaceful Shropshire countryside, Davenport House offers a special blend of historic charm and classic elegance. The moment you arrive along its sweeping driveway, the house’s striking symmetry and warm red-brick façade give a lovely impression. Inside, the grand entrance hall, original staircase and beautifully restored period features create a sense of classic romance, only complemented by the light and airy reception spaces. The surrounding grounds are also filled with quiet woodland paths and open countryside views, offering a serene setting for guests to explore throughout the day. From its grand interiors to the expansive exteriors, Davenport House really is a lovely backdrop for an English country house wedding and it’s always a pleasure to photograph at the estate! A few words on

Getting married in Devon

Although I grew up in New Zealand, I’ve been travelling over to see my close family in Devon for much of my life and so have always had a bit of a foot in both countries. Admittedly, my opinion may be slightly skewed because I love a country house wedding venue and Devon is full of these (Pynes House and Huntsham Court are some of my all-time favourites to mention a few), but the allure of Devon also lies in its beautiful landscapes.

From its sweeping hills to the dramatic red rock Jurassic coast, there’s always been something pretty special about this part of the world. Along both the North and South Coasts, Devon also has some unique coastal wedding venues – The Grain Store near Torquay in Kingsbridge is one of my favourites and I recently did an incredible Devon summertime wedding there, where the ceremony took place right by the sea. For those who love the idea of a celebration in a national park, a Dartmoor wedding amongst its expansive moorlands and untouched forests can be absolutely beautiful too. Plus, you’ve got Cornwall just next door if you wanted to extend your travels slightly while you’re in this part of the country. All in all, I know I may be biased as a wedding photographer Devon, but Devon has definitely got quite a bit to offer when it comes to getting married in the UK.
